Said Moheb Hashimy performed Tabla with the following noted artists: Ustad Majeed Sepand, Mahshar, Ehsan (sitar) Ustad Khatam, Gul Nazeer, Mushfiq Hashimi (vocalists) Fawad (violin), and Rohullah Roin and Ustad Sharafat Ali Khan from the Shamchorasi Gharana
Said Moheb Hashimy is the disciple of Ustad Arif Choshti and Ustad Ejaz Hussein of the Punjab Gharana. He has been teaching now for 15 years in 4 different countries around the world. He is a percussionist of renown, is a composer and a professional performing artist.
Born in Kabul Afghanistan, his first introduction to playing music was to learn how to play the traditional drum, "Doholak", which was passed down to him through his family.
He quickly immersed himself in Tabla studies, under the North Indian classical style of playing. After a number of years of study he developed an active professional career as a musician in Afghanistan. He performed at concerts throughout secondary schools and at the university, official government functions, private engagements, as well as performances broadcasts on Afghanistan TV and Radio Kabul.
In 1993 he moved to Pakistan to escape the bombing of Afghanistan. Thankfully he was able to continue to live and thrive as an artist. In addition to formalized studies with some of the most respected musicians in Pakistan, Moheb had a very active schedule, performing almost every weekend. As the founder, executive director and tabla instructor of the Sargam Music Academy in Islamabad, it was rewarding to have achieved an enrolment of approximately 1,000 students. While in Pakistan Moheb did a 20-day performance tour throughout Kazakhstan such as in Almaty, playing in house concerts and concert halls, some of which were broadcast on local radio.
In 2004, Moheb immigrated to Canada and has continued to pursue his career as a professional musician. His primary career is as a chamber musician, although he can also be engaged to freelance for musicians who want a tabla player for performances and recording studio sessions.
Moheb teaches tabla at the Mushfiq Arts Centre in Ottawa and is available to accept new students, whether they are beginners, intermediate or advanced. Percussion or music students in western music (folk, jazz, classical, world, or rock) are also welcome. He has a diverse student population in age and cultural background. Moheb has been able to establish and maintain a keen interest among his students through his teaching techniques and interaction abilities. In addition to teaching at the Mushfiq Arts Centre, Moheb has also been visiting faculty at workshops/camps organized by schools and cultural organizations in Ottawa. He tailor makes the curriculum to suit audience interests and focus.
Moheb's main music performance work is as the percussionist in The Mushfiq Ensemble. Since the drum is a common cultural connection between all peoples, Moheb demonstrates his remarkable skills with engaging solos, which are part of the Ensemble repertoire. The Ensemble has had numerous performance engagements in Canada - such as at the Masala Mehndi Masti Festival in Toronto, the Ottawa Folk Festival, and the Festival Accès Asie in Montreal. Most recently the Ensemble was selected to be one of the Official Artists showcased at the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals.
